shuftiThere had been a certain amount of panic at Shufti's second scan, when the sonographer realised they had missed twins on the first scan. Shufti, who had already found out as much from Guppy, kept her face suitably puzzled as they got doctors in looking at the scan.
She had booked in with a different obstetrician, having discussed it with CJ, dissatisfied both by the abruptness of the first one and the fact that he had missed the twins. Her new doctor was somewhat more sympathetic to Shufti's lack of knowledge of the American health care system.
"Your last child was born at home before the ambulance arrived?" he asked, consulting her notes. "And your son was born back in Russia?"
"Yes." Shufti nodded. It was marvellous the things that Carl, a wealthy reputable businessman*, managed to get hold of. A complete set of medical records in Russian, and a translation, had proved almost as invaluable as her and Jack's fake birth certificates.
She'd had to have scans every couple of weeks, but since the defeat of the Krampus, had felt a little more relaxed about it. After one of the scans, the doctor asked to see her back in the clinic.
"You have monochorionic monoamniotic twins." He says. "You will have to have a caesarean at thirty four weeks."
"What does monochori... those terms, what were they?" Shufti asks.
"It means your twins share both a placenta and a birth sac." the doctor says.
Before he can explain any further, his phone rings, and it appears he has to go to an emergency delivery. He hands Shufti some leaflets.
"We'll see you for your next scan in a few weeks. I'm very sorry, I have to go." he says, before hurrying out.
Shufti peers at the leaflets, then takes them home to work out.
[*Shufti had an inkling that in the past he'd been up to a bit of shady behaviour. But since these days he made his money honestly from the businesses he had acquired, and keeps his work life and his home life separate, has never had any idea of the scale of his gang days.]
