The table is set neatly with a white cloth, and a few covered plates of food. Jack has been bathed, and is asleep quietly in a cot nearby.

Shufti fidgets, tidying various baby things.

There is a knock at the door and Amand stands outside with a bottle of champagne. Not being one to come empty handed.

An involuntary jump at the knock, even if she knows she is expecting company. She peeps out of the little hole in the door, then opens it, smiling. She is wearing the pretty dress Molly bought her for her birthday, saved for special occasions.

"Hello Amanda, come on in."

Amanda stands a little stunned for a moment but recovers quickly. "Thank you." stepping in the door, "You look fantastic."

A bigger smile.

"Thank you. Molly gave me the dress for my birthday, and it's nice to have an occasion to wear it."

Out of the practical clothes she usually wears, she looks a little more like the eighteen-year old young lady that she should, rather than having the appearance of an exhausted fifteen year old as she usually does. The tiredness is still there in the background, but maybe masked a little.

Shufti still looks like a child to Amanda but the immortal knows better, "As am I." Looking around, "Is there someplace we can chill this?"

"Oh thank you, that's very kind."

She thinks for a moment.

"Bathroom sink?"

"Not the usual place but then Milliways is anything but usual." Goes into the bathroom and runs very cold water in the sink plugging the hole so that the bottle can rest in the cool water for a while.

"Is there anything I can help with?"

She shakes her head.

"Nope, ready when you are. A lot of Borogravian food is served cold, because there's sometimes not much fuel, and I didn't have access to a cooker, so I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all." Amanda looks around, "You should have a cooker and a refrigerator, at least when you're in Milliways. If you want one anyway." yes Amanda will get her one cause well it's Shufti.

The immortal takes a seat when her hosts appears ready and sit patiently.

"Am I allowed to do that?" she asks curiously, before beginning to serve the food out.

Most of it is more or less recognisable. There is some cooked chicken that she got from the bar earlier, but is now cold and mixed in with various vegetables. Amanda may also spot some dandilion leaves. A milk-based sauce has been prepared on the side, with flour, onion and herbs used amongst other things.

"Of course. I've seen it in other rooms." maybe but then she was always good at bluffing.

"This looks delicious." sincerely though she waits for Shufti to sit before she starts.

She smiles and brings out a water jug, then takes a seat. She takes a few seconds to say a very short grace in Borogravian, then smiles a little and starts.

"There's plenty more if you would like more of anything else." She had after all made enough for Strahan as well.

Yes Amanda has unfortunately been unable to locate him since she got back.

"Thank you." Amanda starts, "Is CJ not able to make it?" she had expected him to be here.

"I haven't seen him since yesterday. And I didn't find anyone who could help me write him a note."

A small smile. "But I'm sure we can do this again when all four of us are around."

"I would like that very much." taking a bite of the chicken.

"If you like I could teach you to read and write."

"I'm learning." she says with a smile.

"But a little help would be much appreciated, thank you. I want to be able to teach Jack."

The baby is sucking his thumb as he sleeps.

Amanda nods, "I learned when I was thirty. Didn't think it was that important at the time but it has proved most useful.

"Well so many people send notes around here, I really ought to try harder." she says, tucking into some chicken.

"I was sent something earlier and I'm still only half way through reading it."

"It does get easier with practice and English is a rather difficult language to master. Espcially with it long history of evolution. There is something called a Dictionary that contains most words and their meanings."

"... I thought I was learning Morporkian, but in any case I'm more or less bilingual. I just need to make the words go on the page."

Amanda didn't know that. Being self centered as she is she just assumed that Shufti was learning English, "Well then I probably can't help as much as I would like." grinning, "Who is teaching you Morporkian?"

[shufti]

"I think they're the same. People from Earth have been writing me notes and they can't be in Morporkian."

A small smile. "I'm more or less teaching myself. Molly leant me an electronic thing to help."

"A computer?" and shrugs, "I think Bar translates for us."

"I'm not sure. Like a flat box with a special pen and a screen."

"Probably." smiling, "I'm impressed most people don't take it upon themselves and wouldn't be able to leanr it on their own." Taking a few more bites.

[shufti]

"I'm not very good yet. I can just about work out words when I read them, but the spellings are so strange I can't always work out how to write them."

"Sorry I can't be of much help. But I'm sure you'll get it in time." a brief pause, "What do you have planned for your future? Are you going to keep working at the inn with your friends?"

[shufti]

A pause.

"No. The inn... might not even be there any more."

Looking up. "Polly's reenlisted. Paul and I were driven from the inn about a month before I got back here. We nearly starved and... he's in a bad way. I'm taking a small rescue party back once I'm deemed fit enough. The next time I go home after that, Jack and I will be making the trip to Lancre."

Her fork stops halfway between her plate and her mouth, which is gaping open. "Oh dear." finally putting her fork down, "May I join you?" Amanda likes Paul and would like to help him.

She nods.

"Of course, if you want. CJ, Guppy and Sam are coming. Guppy wants me to get a little more weight on before we try it. I'm leaving Jack with Molly if I can."

"I do. I definetely want to help. And if Guppy's going I would like to be there to keep an eye on him too. But don't tell him I said so."

She tilts her head a little.

"Why? Is he particularly likely to get hurt?"

"I worry about him is all. Can't help it." mortals seem so fragile to her.

[shufti]

She nods.

"Fair enough. But he's a grown man, and I'm sure with a bit of training he'll be fine."

"He is a grown man I just worry that even with training he wont have the heart to use it to hurt another human being." their is warmth in her voice.

She hesitates, then nods.

"Yeah, I see your point. He's a bit on the soft and gooey side."

"And I wouldn't want him anyother way. Anyway I wont worry about him as much when he's within eyeshot."
