May. 4th, 2006 09:24 pm"Excuse me Miss."
Shufti looks around at the smiling, skinny little man.
"This is a staff area." she says calmly, loading up the crossbow. "The sign clearly says that trespassers will be shot."
"Oh." the man says, taking a step back. He has his hand to his abdomen and sways a little.
"I didn't see. Thing is, I already have been."
He collapses onto the floor in front of her. Shufti stares in alarm, then sends one of the kitchen staff to get Polly. With Jack strapped to the sling on her front she kneels in front of the man with blood dripping off him onto the floor.
"Please." he begs. "A little water."
She passes him the jug, which he takes, holding her hand gently as he does so. He smiles manically.
"Knife. No noise. Don't pull away. That babe of yours is too close."
He pulls out a pair of handcuffs and claps them around her wrists behind her back.
"Not a sound blue-eyes. They say you fight like a tiger so we'll be leaving that babe of yours on your front."
He stands, grabs her by the arm with one hand and holds the knife next to Jack with the other. She doesn't scream, she does as she's told, and follows without fuss. Praying silently to anyone listening.
Because she knows that in a few seconds Polly will be behind her. She feigns a limp as the man hurries her along, already seeing Paul lining up a shot out of the window, then as the Girl's Working School comes into sight, starts to cough in the hope of being able to bend double and give him a clear shot.
There is a massive explosion from just in front of her. The man leading her drops silently to the ground. When she straightens, she gasps, then leaves the fallen man and begins to run back towards the inn. Knowing that if she hadn't just bent down, that shrapnel would have been heading for her head instead of his. Knowing that if Lofty and Tonker hadn't got to the Girls' Working School just then, that she would have had a much tougher time escaping. Knowing that there is blood dripping down her head onto Jack.
Polly meets her coming back and holds her tight in a hug. Then silently leads her upstairs to the attic door.
"Go to your safe place." she says quietly to Shufti. "I can't get those off you. But remember that it's over now, and you can come back when you're stronger."
