Mar. 18th, 2006 04:53 pmGuppy approaches and knocks on the door. A few moments later a quiet voice emerges.
"Who is it?"
"It's Guppy."
A pause.
"What do you want?"
"Amanda asked me to see if you were okay." Guppy replies. The lock slips back and she peeps out, crossbow in hand. When satisfied that it is him and only him she lets him in.
"Doctor Hank looks after me." she says, sitting down on the bed and giving him no eye contact.
Guppy nods. "I know. We work together here and he's a bit busy at the moment. Amanda was worried because you hurt your head back home."
Shufti looks up. "That was weeks ago. I'm fine."
"Yes, you probably are. But there could be underlying problems such as a fractured scull." he smiles gently. "No pressure, I can go away if you want."
"No, it's okay. Mal trusts you and you're a friend or Doctor Hank. I've seen you, you help people." She looks up. "Do I need to come with you?"
Guppy smiles a little. "That would probably help. Then I could use the scanner."
He holds out a hand to her and she takes it, following him to the infirmary. He sets up the scanner as she gets comfortable, and does a quick check of her head whilst she lies still.
"Okay, I can't see any damage, so that's good." he smiles. "Always best to check when you've been knocked out."
Shufti nods in agreement.
"Doctor Guppy? Please can you check the baby's okay? I got in quite a fight and it moves all right but I'm very scared of damaging it."
Guppy smiles. "Of course, just give me a second and I'll adjust the scanner." He switches it to produce an ultrasound-type image. Despite the modern tech, he's most comfortable with the stuff he's used to.
"Have you had any pain or bleeding?" he asks, running the scanner over her gently. She shakes her head.
"I feel ill sometimes after I eat, and sometimes I feel faint. But that happened before the fight too."
Guppy nods. "That's probably partially to do with your diet. Take it slowly but try and increase your food intake, okay? Especially foods high in iron like liver and spinich."
He turns the moniter towards her. "There you go, your baby is just fine. A bit small for its age but not enough to cause concern."
Shufti freezes and screams. Guppy jumps back in alarm and the image disappears. She jumps off the bed in tears.
"Shufti, what's wrong?" he asks, putting his hands up as a loaded crossbow is thrust up in his direction. He backs off. "It didn't hurt you or the baby to make the picture."
"It's all right for you." she sobs. "Nuggan isn't watching you."
"Shufti." Guppy keeps his distance and speaks calmly. "Please put the crossbow down. I will not move and I'm sorry for upsetting you. I honestly didn't know."
For one moment it looks like she will shoot him. Her hand shakes as the tears run down her cheeks. But she doesn't, instead giving a sob and fleeing the room, leaving Guppy to breathe.
