"Jack, you are half way across the universe from home. Stop playing Angry Birds." Shufti says, firmly, confiscating Jack's phone. Totally unsuitable for a nine-year-old, she doesn't know why Carl insisted on buying it for him. CJ is putting on his most innocent expression, but not objecting to the confiscation.
"Mom?" Leah asks, putting her hand on Shufti's bump as she has taken to doing lately. "Are the twins going to be brothers or sisters?"
"We don't know yet." Shufti says. "But they'll both be the same."
"Mom?"
"Yes Leah?"
"Is there a McDonalds in Borogravia?"
Shufti blinks and mentally facepalms.
"No Leah, there isn't a McDonalds in Borogravia. I brought sandwiches, though, so you don't need to eat rat."
There is a simultaneous 'Ewwwww' from the children, until Shufti hushes them. At least they can get to Borogravia by train now, which is better than the carriage drawn by horses they would otherwise have been travelling on. But the effect of travelling half way across the universe seems to have been lost entirely on the children. Though they were quite impressed at getting to go on an old fashioned steam train.
They stop briefly for lunch, after which they make the last part of the journey by carriage. It isn't difficult to find; the Private Estate is one of the few surviving large houses in Borogravia with anything worth inheriting.
Even that, when the get closer, is looking dishevelled, and clearly in need of repair. They trek up the driveway, carrying their emergency supplies.
"Does he know we're coming?" Jack asks, quietly, as they get to the front door.
"Oh yes."
Johnny Private opens the front door, looks down at Jack, and smirks.
But Shufti is staring beyond him, into the hallway, where a boy is staring back. He looks a lot like Jack, same sort of age, though thinner.
"Theodore!" Johnny barks at the boy. "Come and greet your double."
